Beware of Fraudulent Activity
May 20, 2020
The Vance County Sheriff's Office would like to make the public aware of some recent trends that have been noticed regarding fraudulent activity. From May 4 - May 19, 2020, the Vance County Sheriff's Office received 9 reports related to Fraud, Identity Theft, Credit Card Fraud, and Obtaining Property by False Pretense. It appears as though some of these cases have international ties.
Everyone should be mindful that if you receive a request from an unknown person or persons, or someone whom you only know through a social media application and have not met in person, wanting you to send them gift card information, Green Dot or Money Gram cards or numbers, supply them with your banking information or Social Security Number, or purchase an animal sight unseen online, you may be getting scammed.
Fraudsters are taking advantage of the increase in online transactions resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic to prey on our citizens. Please be cautious with online transactions, keep a check on your bank accounts, and do not provide personal information over the phone.
